We were talking about how Dieselgate would kill diesel passenger cars in the US. I remember a firm cry against airbags, then it disappeared, but I never heard it return with the recalls. When shopping for another vehicle do you check to see if the airbag was replaced or recalled? Do you think the designs and regulations need to be changed? Do you know anyone that says, “Why pay for a feature you’ll never use? You only get one use and if it goes off for any reason, the car is totaled!”
Kind of a heavy question for this time of day, but I’d like to read your thoughts or information on a subject I don’t really know anything about (airbags). Learn me something, please Oppo.

...Have you ever been to New Hampshire? It’s like New England’s Deep South. The Deep North, I guess. I bet there’s more than a few anti-baggers up there.

I’m not against them, just ambivalent about them, in that I don’t really care whether or not my car has them.

I’m dead either way. 2 cars with no airbags, and one with a takata airbag.

I would rather be impaled then have my face blown off.

But something something children — No wait, you have to protect small children from the airbag too...

Don’t have them, so doesn’t enter the thought process.

Shit, my dad is still anti seat belt. Even after I told him the seat belt is there to protect him from the explosives in his steering wheel.

I’d rather not have them. My wife is kinda short and we wear our seat belts. Plus I’m from that generation that rode in the back window of cars and lap belts were common.

I would prefer my vehicles not to have them from an aesthetics/ simplicity standpoint, but I am very interested in the airbag riding suits for motorcyclists

I don't particularly care one way or another. I prefer the visibility out of cars that don't have 8 million of them. I've never been in an accident where they've gone off so I probably don't have the most educated opinion.

Seatbelts do the heavy lifting. They take the bulk of the energy in a crash. Airbags are important too, though. They’re designed to work with each othe. In modern cars, they mainly prevent neck injury and keep you from impacting the steering wheel.
Belts have a load limiting feature that keeps the torso load to, say, 2kN and allows the belt to pay out. This prevents rib fractures. However, without a bag, you’ll definitely smash your head on the steering wheel and be way worse off.
Lastly, the failure rate on the inflators is very small. I’d still rather have one than no airbag.

Airbags are like insurance - you hope to never use it but should be happy if the need does ever arise.
However, airbags that shoot shrapnel at you are like really shitty insurance - you think you have coverage when needed but you get fucked in the ass face when you really need it.
In general, I am for airbags as I am for insurance: it’s the execution (no pun intended but now that I think of it sort of intended) that matters.

I’ve always said I’d rather have no airbags than 20 year old ones, but I know people who will not daily a car without airbags.
